Hanging up

I think a useful Messenger feature would be one that closes a chat window when your friend goes offline or doesn't say anything for a while. I feel impolite closing chat windows on people. It's like hanging up while they're talking, even if the actual conversation ended an hour ago. That might be just me.

PS - Useful for those people who don't say goodbye.
PPS - I'm sure you know a few of those.

i know in some messaging programs it tells you when the person you are talking with has closed the window, that way you can also close the window on them without feeling guilty about it. but i guess in return you feel bad cause they closed the window on you first. :S

Is that so? I didn't know any messaging programs had that feature, and it's true that it might incite bad feelings. Perhaps an auto-close operation could inform the person on the other end that the window has been closed due to inactivity. That might work. Or it might raise panic that your chat buddy has passed out or something.
