If desk allocations were decided at your company by an impartial optimising computer program, would you feel better about that or worse? It would probably depend on who wrote the program and to what specifications. It would be too easy to write a program that does a much worse job than a person in this regard.

PPS - Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the plan any more.

I guess you base it on the project links between people, the more projects you are involved in together, the closer you sit together, but then that would be changing all the time when new projects start and old ones finish, how often are the seating arrangements changed?
Well, that's part of the trouble and fun, isn't it? The program would need to make sure individuals are not moved too often, but also that they are placed close to people who tend to work on the same projects. It's a delicate balance.
